A sharp, objectively dubious gambit against the Four Pawns Attack in which Black strikes at f4 with ...g5. It is also known as the Planinc Variation.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Cambridge Gambit
The Cambridge Gambit, 5...g5, is also called the Planinc Variation after Albin Planinc, who played it in the 1970s. The pawn offer aims to undermine f4 and, with it, the support of e5. Capturing is inaccurate: after 6. fxg5 dxe5 7. dxe5 Qxd1+ 8. Kxd1 Bg7, Black regains the pawn with the better structure and development. Declining, for example with 6. Nf3, usually favors White, and engines give White a clear edge. Black nonetheless scores well in online games.
