About the Korchnoi Variation

The Korchnoi Variation arises when Black answers 6. fxe5 with 6...Bf5 rather than the usual 6...Nc6. This order keeps ...c5 available before the knight is committed. After 7. Nc3 e6 8. Nf3 Be7 9. Be2 O-O 10. O-O, Black completes development and plays 10...f6. The break hits e5, the spearhead of White's center. If the pawns are exchanged, the f-file opens and Black's pieces gain more scope against d4.
