About the Tartakower Variation

The Tartakower Variation of the Four Pawns Attack arises after 7. Be3 Bf5 8. Nc3 e6 9. Nf3 Qd7. Black chooses queenside castling here, rather than the alternative 9...Be7, which prepares ...f6. After 10. Be2 O-O-O 11. O-O Be7 the kings stand on opposite wings. Black's rook on the half-open d-file joins the knights against d4, while White keeps central space and the half-open f-file.
