An Alekhine Defense line in which Black meets 5. Be2 with the quiet 5...c6, supporting the d5-knight and keeping the central tension.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Flohr Variation
The Flohr Variation, 5...c6, follows 4...Bg4 5. Be2 in the Modern Variation. It is a quiet pawn move that props up the knight on d5 and keeps the central tension, instead of resolving it with ...dxe5 or ...e6. White most often castles with 6. O-O. The move 6. c4 gains time against the knight and scores better for White, and 6. exd6 is the other common choice. Engines rate White as clearly better, though practical results are nearly even.
