The Modern Line, 3...f6, answers the threat of f3 trapping the knight on e4. If White plays f3, the knight can go to g5, where the f6-pawn protects it. The pawn on f6 also attacks e5. The usual reply is 4. Bd3, which challenges the knight at once. 4. f3 and 4. exf6 are the main alternatives, and 4. exf6 has scored very well for White in the few games available. Engines rate the position as clearly better for White.
