The Nd2 Variation arises in the accepted Benko Gambit after 6. Nc3 d6 7. Nf3 g6. Here White plays 8. Nd2 instead of the Fianchetto Variation, 8. g3. The knight goes back from f3 to d2, where it covers c4 and e4, and White keeps the extra pawn. Black carries on with the standard plan: ...Bg7 and pressure along the half-open a- and b-files.
