About the Lasker Variation

The Lasker Variation arises after 1. f4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. e3 c5. Black places a second pawn beside d5 instead of fianchettoing with ...g6. The structure resembles a Dutch Defense with colors reversed, with Black adopting a queen's-pawn setup. The pawns on c5 and d5 take space and keep the advance ...d4 available. That advance sharpens a recurring Bird problem: where to develop the b1 knight. When Black pushes ...d4, White can answer with a4 and Na3, gaining a grip on the queenside while keeping options open.

The most common reply is 4. b3, which prepares Bb2 and the Bird's typical dark-square pressure on e5. 4. Be2 is a flexible alternative that can lead to the e3-e4 break after d3. 4. d4 sets up a Stonewall formation. The engine also rates 4. Bb5+ highly. It fits the idea of exchanging the bishop for a knight on c6 so that the f3 knight can settle on e5. The engine judges the position roughly balanced, while on Lichess White scores somewhat better than Black, especially after 4. b3.
