A rare reply to the Philidor Variation of the Bishop's Opening in which Black brings the queen to g5 early to attack the undefended g2-pawn.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the del Rio Variation
The del Rio Variation answers the Philidor Variation, 3. c3, with the immediate 3...Qg5. Instead of contesting the center or developing a knight, Black uses the queen to strike at g2, which is unprotected while the king's knight remains on g1. White has to deal with this threat before carrying out the planned d4 advance. The early queen sortie gives White chances to gain time against it, and the line is rarely seen.
