The Lopez Gambit is a rare Bishop's Opening line in which White meets 3...Nf6 with 4. f4, offering the f-pawn in the spirit of the King's Gambit.

About the Lopez Gambit

The Lopez Gambit follows the Lopez Variation's usual reply 3...Nf6 with 4. f4, the advance that 3. Qe2 was meant to prepare. Because the queen already guards e4, White can offer the f-pawn to open the f-file and fight for the center, producing play akin to a King's Gambit with both bishops developed. Black's bishop on c5 bears on g1, which complicates White's kingside castling. The line is rarely seen.
