An old romantic gambit in the Bishop's Opening in which Black follows the pawn sacrifice 2...b5 with 3...f5, a line considered favorable for White.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Thorold Gambit
The Thorold Gambit adds a second thrust, 3...f5, to the dubious 2...b5, which is itself a sort of reversed Evans Gambit, and attacks e4 immediately. Adolf Anderssen, who favored 2...b5, tried this continuation. White does well with either 4. exf5 or 4. d4. With the bishop on b5 pinning nothing yet still controlling c6, ...Nc6 is unavailable, so a queen recapture on d4 loses no time. After 4. d4 fxe4? 5. Qh5+ g6 6. Qxe5+ Black's position falls apart.
