About the Panov Variation

The Panov Variation is Black's way of declining the Urusov Gambit. Instead of taking on e4, Black strikes in the center with 4...d5, and after 5. exd5 Bb4+ 6. c3 Qe7+ the queen check along the open e-file forces White to interpose. Material is level, and Black's pawn still stands on d4. After 7. Be2 dxc3, White can recapture with either 8. bxc3 or 8. Nxc3, and both lead to a roughly equal game.
