About the Stader Variation

The Stader Variation arises when Black meets 7. g4 with 7...Be4 rather than the calmer retreat 7...Bg6. Placing the bishop on e4 sidesteps the Nxg6 exchange that would damage Black's kingside pawns. The bishop stands in the center, where the f6 knight defends it, but White's c3 knight can challenge it. Black stays a pawn up, and the play is considerably sharper than after 7...Bg6.
