About the Holwell Defense

The Holwell Defense is 5...Qd6, one of the less common replies after 5. Nxf3 in the accepted Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. Black keeps the extra pawn and places the queen on the half-open d-file, where it bears on White's isolated central pawn on d4. The early queen move can, however, become a target for White's developing pieces, such as Nb5 or Bf4, which would add to White's lead in development.
