About the Monticelli Trap

The Monticelli Trap is a combination in the Bogo-Indian Defense, reached here through a Queen's Indian move order. It is named after Mario Monticelli, who played it against Prokeš at Budapest in 1926. After 9...Nxc3, White ignores the knight and plays 10. Ng5, threatening both Qxh7# and Bxb7. Following 10...Ne4 11. Bxe4 or 10...Qxg5 11. Bxb7, White wins the exchange, but Black collects pawns in return. Capablanca twice allowed the line against Euwe in 1931 and drew both games.
