The New England Variation answers the Bogo-Indian check with 4. Nfd2, interposing the knight from f3 rather than the bishop or the queen's knight. The b1-knight stays free to develop to its natural c3-square, but White spends a tempo retreating an already developed piece and still shuts in the c1-bishop. It is a rarity next to the standard 4. Bd2 and 4. Nbd2.
