Train it in TheoriaAbout the Goldman Variation
The Goldman Variation is a sideline of the Caro-Kann Defense in which White meets 1. e4 c6 2. Nc3 d5 with 3. Qf3, instead of the more usual 3. Nf3 of the Two Knights Attack or 3. d4, which transposes to main lines. The queen adds a second defender to e4. White can therefore keep the pawn tension without committing the d-pawn, and an exchange on e4 lets a piece recapture. The cost is the familiar one of an early queen sortie: it takes the f3-square from the g1-knight and can become a target for Black's developing pieces. Graham Burgess nonetheless assessed White's position as sound.
Black most often clarifies the center at once with 3...dxe4. The alternative 3...d4 gains space and drives the c3-knight away, while 3...Nf6 develops and increases the pressure on e4. Engines also rate 3...Be6 among the best replies, and they consider the position level. In the Lichess database, however, White scores well. The line is a rare guest even among Caro-Kann sidelines and functions mainly as a way to sidestep established theory.
