About the Masi Variation

The Masi Variation is an offbeat branch of the Caro-Kann Defense. Black meets 2. d4 with 2...Nf6 instead of the usual 2...d5, attacking the e4-pawn before contesting the center with a pawn. The cost is that the knight becomes a target. The most common and most testing reply is 3. e5, which drives the knight to d5. If White chases it again with 4. c4, it retreats to c7. There it covers d5 and e6, but it stands passively while White holds extra space and a broad pawn front. The result resembles Alekhine's Defense, with Black's c-pawn already committed to c6.

White has two other main options. 3. Nc3 simply defends the pawn and keeps a flexible center. 3. Bd3 does the same with the bishop, and it scores particularly well for White in the database. The variation is seldom played, and White wins more often than Black across all three lines. Engines give White a slight edge after 2...Nf6, a larger margin than after the main-line 2...d5.
