A Center Game sideline in which Black meets the Paulsen Attack with 4...f5, striking at e4 at the cost of loosening the kingside.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the l'Hermet Variation
The l'Hermet Variation answers the Paulsen Attack, 4. Qe3, with 4...f5, an immediate challenge to White's e4-pawn in place of the developing 4...Nf6 of the Berger Variation. Black aims to eliminate White's last central pawn and open lines for the pieces. The cost is a loosened e8–h5 diagonal and a weakened e-file, where the queen on e3 already stands opposite the black king. The result is a provocative, double-edged sideline.
