The Pterodactyl Variation is the most direct of the early queen-check lines against the Colle setup. Black plays 4...Qa5+ immediately, without first exchanging on d4. White must answer the check before castling or finishing queenside development. The queen on a5 joins the g7 bishop and the c5 pawn in pressing the dark squares, d4 in particular. Unlike the Siroccopteryx Variation, the pawn tension on d4 is kept, so Black retains the option of ...cxd4 later.
