Train it in TheoriaAbout the Mikenas-Carls Variation
The Mikenas-Carls Variation is the main independent branch of the Agincourt Defense, 1. c4 e6. Instead of allowing ...d5 to steer the game into Queen's Gambit Declined or Catalan channels, White advances 3. e4. This builds a broad c4–e4 front and threatens either e5, driving away the f6-knight, or d4 to take over the center outright. The same position also arises from the Anglo-Indian move order 1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e6 3. e4. The resulting play is sharp, and the line is popular among stronger players.
Black's most frequent answer is 3...d5, challenging the center at once. 3...c5, the Mikenas-Carls Sicilian, gives Black a Sicilian-style structure aimed at controlling d4. 3...Bb4 pins the knight in Nimzo-Indian fashion, though White scores especially well against it in online games. Quieter options are 3...d6 and 3...Nc6. The engine considers the position roughly balanced, while White's practical results are clearly better than Black's.
