An eccentric reply to the English Opening, 1...g5 adapts Grob's Attack for Black and targets d4; theory and engines both favor White.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Myers Defense
1...g5 is an eccentric reply named after Hugh Myers, who promoted it in print and in his own games. Black treats it as a better version of Grob's Attack. After 2. d4, the plan is to hit d4 with ...Bg7, ...c5 and ...Qb6, and 2...Bg7 3. Bxg5 c5 offers a Grob-style gambit. Nunn's Chess Openings gives White a small edge after 2. d4 Bg7 3. Nc3 h6 4. e4. Engines rate White clearly better, and 2. Nc3 is the most common reply.
