Train it in TheoriaAbout the Neo-Catalan Declined
The Neo-Catalan Declined arises when Black faces White's Catalan-style setup of c4, Nf3, g3 and Bg2, without a pawn on d4, and answers with 4...Be7 instead of capturing on c4. The capture 4...dxc4, the Neo-Catalan Accepted, usually leads to 5. Qa4+ and White regaining the pawn. The bishop move is the quieter path. It completes kingside development and prepares castling while the d5-pawn stays where it is. White's d-pawn remains flexible: it can advance to d4 later or stop on d3 in Réti fashion. The engine ranks d4, O-O and d3 as the leading options.
By far the most frequent continuation is 5. O-O, the line ECO files under A14. The rarer 5. b3 prepares a queenside fianchetto. 5. d4 transposes directly into the Closed Catalan, and 5. cxd5 releases the central tension at once. The engine assesses the position as roughly balanced, and in online games White scores somewhat better than Black. Play tends to be maneuvering rather than forcing, and much depends on whether and when White commits to d4.
