About the Porcupine Variation

The Porcupine Variation arises from the Anglo-Dutch Defense, 1. c4 f5, when White answers 2. Nc3 Nf6 with the central thrust 3. e4. After 3...fxe4 White does not regain the pawn with a knight move but plays 4. g4, a pawn down and offering more, intending g5 to dislodge the f6-knight and undermine Black's grip on e4. Black keeps a doubled e-pawn and the extra material, while White plays on the half-open f-file and for rapid development.
