This Hedgehog line arises after White recaptures 8. Qxd4 and Black completes the standard setup of ...b6, ...Bb7, ...Be7, ...d6 and ...a6, then adds 10...Nbd7. Black's pawns on a6, b6, d6 and e6 cover the fifth rank, while White, with 9. Rd1 and 10. b3, trains pieces on the d6-pawn along the half-open d-file. Play tends toward extended maneuvering, with both sides watching for a well-timed pawn break.
