About the Oldtimer Variation

The Oldtimer Variation arises in the 5...Ng6 branch of the Halloween Gambit after 6. e5 Ng8 7. Bc4 Bb4 8. Qf3 f5. Black develops the dark-squared bishop with a pin on the c3 knight. When White's queen joins the bishop in eyeing f7, Black blocks the f-file with 8...f5. Black stays a piece for a pawn ahead, while White relies on the pawns on d4 and e5 and on more active pieces for compensation.
