About the Bardeleben Variation

This sharp branch of the Classical Variation, 4...Bc5, begins after 5. O-O O-O. White plays the fork trick 6. Nxe5 Nxe5 7. d4, giving up a piece for the moment. The pawns then chase Black's minor pieces with 7...Bd6 8. f4 Nc6 9. e5 Bb4. In the final position White is still a piece down for a pawn. However, the e5 pawn attacks the f6 knight, and White holds a broad pawn center on d4, e5 and f4.
