About the Janowski Variation

Associated with Dawid Janowski, who played it, this line has Black surrender the dark-squared bishop with 6...Bxc3 rather than mirror White with 6...d6. Because the pawn on d3 rules out dxc3, White must recapture 7. bxc3. This gives White the bishop pair and a half-open b-file in return for doubled c-pawns. The usual sequel is 7...d6 8. Re1, while 7...d5 and 7...Qe7 are also seen. John Nunn regards the exchange as unconvincing for Black.
