About the Hecht-Reefschläger Variation

The Hecht-Reefschläger Variation arises after 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nc6. Instead of the Winawer's 3...Bb4 or the Classical 3...Nf6, Black develops the queen's knight at once, adding pressure to d4 while keeping the tension between d5 and e4. The drawback is structural. The knight stands in front of the c-pawn, so the ...c5 lever, normally Black's main way of striking at White's center in the French, is no longer available in its usual form. If White closes the position, Black must rely more on other ways of challenging the chain.

White's three main replies are played almost equally often. The advance 4. e5 gains space and fixes the structure. The exchange 4. exd5 opens the position. The developing 4. Nf3 keeps options open. The engine prefers 4. e5, with 4. Nf3 and 4. Be3 as alternatives, and rates White's position as slightly better. Reference sources treat the variation as a minor sideline of the 3. Nc3 complex, well below the Winawer and Classical in importance. In online play the results are only modestly in White's favor.
