A McCutcheon French line in which, after 8...Kf8, White retreats 9. Bc1 to keep the dark-squared bishop away from Black's e4-knight.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Duras Variation
The Duras Variation follows the 8...Kf8 branch of the McCutcheon main line. Instead of letting the d2-bishop be exchanged by the e4-knight, White withdraws it with 9. Bc1. Black has already given up the dark-squared bishop, so White's own dark-squared bishop gains value, especially against Black's uncastled king on f8. White accepts doubled c-pawns, an isolated a-pawn and a temporary loss of time in return.
