About the Pelikan Variation

The Pelikan Variation arises when White, after 1. e4 e6 2. Nc3 d5, plays 3. f4 in place of the usual 3. d4. The d-pawn stays home, and the f-pawn prepares to support e5 and to gain kingside space, giving the game a setup closer to a flank opening than to the classical French structures. Because White has not committed to d4, Black's usual ...c5 lever against the base of a pawn chain has no obvious target, so the position does not follow the plans described for the main lines. The cost of 3. f4 is that the e4-pawn is less well supported and the kingside is loosened early.

Black's most common reply is 3...dxe4, which releases the central tension at once and leaves White with a recapture on e4 that it must make before completing development. The second choice is 3...d4, which gains space and drives the c3-knight from its post. The third is 3...Nf6, which develops a piece and increases the pressure on e4, inviting White to advance e5. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced, and results on Lichess are nearly even, with very few draws.
