The Modern System, 3...a6 in the Tarrasch French, is an uncommon waiting move that asks White to commit first while denying White's pieces the b5-square.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Modern System
The Modern System, 3...a6, is an uncommon waiting move in the Tarrasch that gained some following in the 1970s. Like 3...Be7, it asks White to commit before Black chooses a plan. It also takes b5 away from White's pieces, so a later Bb5 is no longer available. The usual reply is 4. Ngf3, with 4. Bd3 and 4. c3 the main alternatives. The engine gives White a slight edge, though results in online play are close to even.
