About the Alatortsev Variation

The Alatortsev Variation is a way of meeting the Alekhine-Maróczy Gambit. Black answers 5. a3 with 5...Be7 instead of exchanging on c3, keeping the dark-squared bishop. White then recovers the pawn with 6. Nxe4. After 6...Nf6 7. N2g3 O-O 8. Be2 Nc6, material is level and Black has castled. White's d4-pawn faces Black's e6-pawn, with the d- and e-files half-open, so the play turns on piece activity rather than on the gambit.
