About the Sokolsky Variation

The Sokolsky Variation belongs to the Classical line and arises from the Spassky Variation, 7...c5 8. Ne2 O-O. After 9. O-O Nc6 10. Be3 Bg4 11. f3 Na5, White retreats with 12. Bd3 instead of taking on f7 as in the Seville Variation. Following 12...cxd4 13. cxd4 Be6, the advance 14. d5 hits the bishop and claims central space. It also leaves the rook on a1 exposed on the long diagonal of the g7-bishop, which makes the play concrete and sharp.
