Offbeat Grünfeld Defense sideline in which White answers 3...d5 with 4. g4, offering a flank pawn to disturb the f6-knight and Black's central control.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Gibbon Gambit
The Gibbon Gambit, 4. g4, departs from the standard treatments of the Grünfeld with an immediate flank thrust. The g4-pawn is unprotected and can be taken by either the f6-knight or the c8-bishop. White's apparent idea is to lure the knight away from its watch over d5 and e4, weakening Black's hold on the center in exchange for the pawn. The resulting play is irregular and lightly charted, well away from the theory of the main Grünfeld lines.
