A rare Hungarian Opening gambit in which Black gives up the e-pawn to gain space and tempo, chasing White's queen's knight with pawn advances.

About the Asten Gambit

The Asten Gambit is an offbeat line of the Hungarian Opening. Black meets White's 3. d4 with 3...e5 and, after 4. dxe5, pushes 4...d4 instead of recapturing. The pawn is given up to drive the knight from c3 and claim space in the center. 5...f5 then hits the knight on e4 again. White is a pawn up, but the extra pawn leaves White with doubled e-pawns. Black's compensation is the tempo gained and a broad pawn front on d4 and f5.
