After 1. g3 e5 2. Nf3 e4, White does not return the knight to g1 and puts it on h4 instead. From there it eyes f5 but sits on the rim. Black has gained space and can harass the knight: 3...Be7 attacks it along the diagonal, while 3...g5 hits it with a pawn. The most common reply is 3...d5, which reinforces e4. The engine rates the position as balanced, and Black scores slightly better in online games.
