About the Przepiorka Variation

The Przepiorka Variation (also spelled Przepiórka) arises when White meets Black's kingside fianchetto in the East Indian Defense by fianchettoing as well, with 3. g3 and Bg2. It is closely related to the Fianchetto Variation of the King's Indian, and Wikibooks files it as that line without c4. Because White has not yet committed the c-pawn, c4 remains available at any moment to transpose into the King's Indian proper, while the option of keeping the pawn on c2 avoids some of Black's sharper Grünfeld and King's Indian setups. ECO classifies this line under A49, separating it from the other East Indian continuations such as the Torre, London and Barry, which fall under A48.

Black almost always continues 3...Bg7, completing the fianchetto and keeping the choice between ...d6 and ...d5 structures open. The direct 3...d5 and 3...d6 are seldom played. Results in the Lichess database are close to even, and engines judge the position roughly balanced, consistent with a calm, maneuvering game in which both sides' bishops contest the long diagonals.
