About the Main Line

This line is the Giuoco Pianissimo's standard maneuvering position, reached via 5...d6 6. O-O O-O 7. Re1 a6 8. Bb3 Ba7 9. h3. With 7. Re1 White adds a defender to e4. Black's 7...a6 keeps a retreat for the c5-bishop, and after 8. Bb3 Ba7 both bishops sit out of reach of a later a4 or b4 pawn advance. 9. h3 rules out a ...Bg4 pin on the f3-knight. The game is a slow, maneuvering struggle.
