About the Tarrasch Variation

The Tarrasch Variation is a branch of the Closed Variation, 4...Qe7. Black answers 5. d4 with 5...Bb6, holding e5 instead of exchanging, and White castles before the e4-pawn can be taken with check. After 6...d6 White gains queenside space with 7. a4, met by 7...a6 to keep a retreat for the bishop. Then 8. h3 rules out ...Bg4, and 9. Re1 reinforces e4, leaving a closed, maneuvering middlegame.
