A sideline of the Evans Gambit Compromised Defense in which White, two pawns down, plays 11. Rd1 to seize the d-file instead of the usual 11. Ba3.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Potter Variation
The Potter Variation deviates from the standard 11. Ba3 in the main line of the Compromised Defense with 11. Rd1. White is two pawns down and does not yet try to restrain the e7-knight or the black king from a3. Instead the rook takes the d-file at once, where it bears on d7. The pawn on e5 already cramps Black, so the rook aims to keep the queenside pieces from developing freely.
