The Lange Variation arises when Black, after 5. b5 Na5 6. Nxe5, answers with 6...Nh6 rather than the Hirschbach Variation's 6...Qg5. Now a pawn down, Black brings the knight over to guard f7 and clears the way to castle, while the b6-bishop keeps its sights on f2. In amateur games White usually continues 7. d4, intending Bxh6 to eliminate the defender of f7, although engine analysis favors the quieter 7. Be2.
