The Pavlov Variation continues the Lange Variation (5. b5 Na5 6. Nxe5 Nh6) with 7. d4, the usual amateur choice, which threatens Bxh6 to remove f7's defender. After 7...d6 8. Bxh6 dxe5 9. Bxg7 Rg8 10. Bxf7+ Kxf7 11. Bxe5 Qg5 12. Nd2, White is a pawn up with a strong center. Black has lost the right to castle but gets play against g2 along the half-open g-file.
