A rare countergambit against the Evans Gambit in which Black ignores the b4-pawn and replies 4...d5, hitting the c4-bishop and e4-pawn.

The Hein Countergambit answers the Evans Gambit with 4...d5. Instead of accepting the b-pawn, Black strikes at the c4-bishop and the e4-pawn at the same time. After 5. exd5, Black rescues the attacked knight with 5...Nxb4, which also removes the pawn that threatened c5. After 5. Bxd5 Bxb4, material is level. White can also capture with 5. bxc5, while 5. c3 and 5. Bb3 are regarded as dubious.
