A sideline of the Evans Gambit in which Black, already two pawns up, answers 7. O-O with 7...b5 to harass the c4-bishop and keep the game sharp.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Johner Defense
The Johner Defense branches from the Pierce Defense of the Evans Gambit. After 6. d4 exd4 7. O-O, Black is two pawns ahead. Instead of developing or consolidating, Black plays 7...b5, which attacks the bishop on c4 and offers back the b-pawn. If White captures, the bishop is drawn away from the a2–g8 diagonal, while Black still holds an extra pawn. The play remains open and tactical, with White behind in material and to move.
