About the Laroche Variation

The Laroche Variation, 6...Nf6, ignores White's central threat and instead develops with a counterattack on e4, in place of the established 6...d6 or 6...exd4. It is regarded as a mistake. After 7. dxe5, the most common reply and the engine's first choice, the pawn gains time against the f6-knight and White sets a trap. The engine gives White a large advantage. Castling with 7. O-O is the second most popular choice, although Black has scored well after it.
