About the Paulsen Variation

The Paulsen Variation comes from the McDonnell Defense, 5...Bc5, and continues 6. d4 exd4 7. O-O d6 8. cxd4 Bb6 9. d5 Na5 10. Bb2 Ne7. White is a pawn down but holds a broad center with pawns on d5 and e4, and the b2-bishop points down the long diagonal toward g7. Black's knight on a5 attacks the c4-bishop, and the other knight goes to e7 rather than f6, where it could be hit by e4-e5.
