About the Steinitz Variation

The Steinitz Variation, named after Wilhelm Steinitz, is a branch of Greco's Attack in which White meets 8...Bxc3 with 9. bxc3 rather than the Møller Attack's 9. d5. After 9...d5, which strikes at the bishop on c4, White ignores the threat and plays 10. Ba3. The bishop takes the a3–f8 diagonal so that Black cannot castle kingside. White, a pawn down, relies on the open e-file and the uncastled black king.
