About the Leonhardt Variation

The Leonhardt Variation is a branch of the Fried Liver Attack, or Fegatello, that begins when White answers 8...Nb4 with 9. Qe4. This keeps pressure on d5 and e5 instead of choosing 9. a3 or 9. Bb3. Black supports d5 with 9...c6. After 10. a3 Na6 11. d4 Nc7, the knight reaches c7 to guard d5. White, a piece down for a pawn, then opens the center against the king on e6.
