About the Knorre Variation

The Knorre Variation branches from the main Polerio line, 8. Be2 h6 9. Nf3 e4 10. Ne5 Bd6 11. d4. Black usually captures en passant with 11...exd3. Instead, Black plays 11...Qc7, keeping the e4-pawn and putting the queen behind the bishop on the b8–h2 diagonal, aimed at the knight on e5. White develops with 12. Bd2 and stays a pawn ahead. Black, whose a- and c-pawns are isolated, relies on the cramping e4-pawn and active pieces.
