Train it in TheoriaAbout the Main Line
The Main Line of the Abbazia Defense, also called the Botvinnik Variation, arises when White meets the attack on d5 with the check 5. Bb5+ instead of defending the pawn. After 5...c6 6. dxc6 bxc6 7. Bc4 Nd5, material is level. Black has regained the pawn and centralized the knight, but has isolated a- and c-pawns and doubled f-pawns. White's bishop on c4 bears on d5, and the half-open b- and d-files shape the play.
